Problem Solving
As a final year student at LISAA, I had the opportunity to collaborate with a team on our graduation project, the game “Les Agents Sucrés.” My role in the project included programming and game design.
Through this experience, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the game development process and encountered unexpected challenges.
Built on the Unreal Engine 4, “Les Agents Sucrés” is a 3D platformer with a vibrant, fast-paced arcade style.
Thanks to the collective efforts of a talented group of individuals, we were able to develop a game that I am honored to showcase in my portfolio.
The team faced challenges during the development, particularly with navigating the verticality of the levels in a fun and intuitive way. The player takes on the role of a sugar agent; the size of a doll inside a kitchen, tasked with adding ingredients to a mother’s cooking while avoiding being spotted.
Initially, the team considered a climbing mechanic, but it proved to be slow and limited, requiring excessive adjustments to the level design. In search of a solution that would match the agreed upon lore and feel of the game, we came up with the idea of a grappling hook, as a good secret agent should have cool gadgets. The grappling hook proved to be the perfect solution, adding an arcade feeling to the game while solving the vertical navigation issue in a fun way.
After prototyping in the Unreal Engine, the team developed a satisfying grappling hook. However, there were still instances where the player couldn’t navigate freely in certain parts of the level. To solve this, we added double jumping boots, enhancing the arcade feel of the game and giving the player the tools to explore the level and collect all candies seamlessly. In conclusion, the development of “Les Agents Sucrés” was filled with challenges, but the team’s perseverance and creativity led to a unique and enjoyable gaming experience.
